You read that right, folks. Here you’ll find 6 Assassin’s Creed Odyssey tips that not only will give you a major advantage, but tips that I wish I had known before playing. Here at VGR, we know that when you get stuck into a new game, strategy gets chucked into the trash. After all, you just want to play the game, right? You don’t want to read up ten million hints, you just want to stab things.
Only after a few hours, you realize that hey, maybe preparing might have been a good idea. You’re now severely under leveled, your equipment sucks and you can never find those blasted treasure chests no matter how hard you look. But don’t fret, because not all is lost.
Why? Because we’re here to help.
1) Do not underuse Ikaros
I cannot stress this tip enough. After spending many, many, many hours searching for supply crates that I need to burn in order to complete an area, I was both frustrated and overjoyed when I gave in and used Ikaros.
Ikaros is Kassandra/Alexios’ eagle, and he can both detect enemies as well as point out useful items, such as treasure and supply crates. This is particularly helpful when you’re in a rush and you just want to burn everything and get out before you’re spotted. Sometimes you might feel as though Ikaros is just an annoying add-on, but trust us when we say it’s worth using him.
Another reason why Ikaros is so great is that you’re able to use him to distract enemies. Again, this doesn’t seem like too big of a deal, but if you want to slip in and out quietly? It helps a lot. Besides, it’s funny to watch your bird pal rip the crap out of your enemies. Really therapeutic.
2) Please, for the love of God, upgrade your ship
I am on my hands and knees, begging you, to pay special attention to this tip. You may feel as though you’re doing fairly okay with your ship. I mean, it isn’t sinking all the time, right?
But no, don’t you dare become complacent! Trust me when I say that you’ll hit a certain point in the game where you’re scared to even go by another ship. You’ll perhaps lovingly caress a Spartan ship, only for the ship to take offense and blast you into the Underworld for even daring to go by it. Which is why I say, for the love of everything holy, upgrade your ship. It’s more important you think.
Which leads us onto the next tip…
3) Wood is your most important resource
Considering how many trees are around in Odyssey, you’d expect a lot more wood to be found in forests. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case. There’s a lot that you can do to find wood, including buying a ton from blacksmiths whenever you come across one. However, for those who are stingy even in the video game world, this may not be the best idea.
So your next best option is pillaging. This can mean looting supply crates that you find in forts around Odyssey’s world, or heading to the sea. When you’re on the Andrestia, you’re able to target ships, though we’d recommend just targeting pirate ships for this. Waste no time in boarding them, the ships then give you their loot after you sink them. You’ll then be in metal and wood paradise.
When you’ve finally got your wood, you can look at tip number two. You know what to do next, right?
4) The Second Wind Ability is something you NEED in your arsenal
There’s no shame in admitting that you’re bad at something. Which is why the Second Wind ability is such a godsend for those who are still getting used to Odyssey’s combat. I’ll freely admit that I died no less than ten times in the first two hours of Odyssey, so this ability? Is the best for countering that.
What Second Wind does is help you regain some health, making those fights that feel impossible just that little more bearable. That is, of course, until you become an Assassins Creed god and kill your enemies as easily as slicing through butter. Inaccurate analogy, but fun all the same.
5) Spears are your friends
Listen to Kassandra and go into Greece to grab yourself a spear, at least for the beginning of the game. Unlike the other weapons, spears have much more reach than say, swords or knives. This can be especially helpful when you want to keep your distance from enemies, particularly if you’ve yet to unlock that legendary Spartan Kick.
Also, it just looks so much better wielding a spear and going ham on your enemies. You can twist, you can twirl and look like a badass while you do so. What isn’t there to love about that?
6) Don’t upgrade your equipment 24/7
Look, this may seem crazy but trust me when I say that upgrading your equipment all the time is a really bad idea. While you may reap the benefits straight away, you’ll soon realize that you upgrading your equipment each time you level up has left your resources drained. Look at tip two and three, then come and tell me how bad that is.
Instead of upgrading constantly, choose to upgrade when you really need to. Every five levels is when I’d say it’s the best time to upgrade your equipment. Not only will you save a lot of money and resources, but you won’t have to travel all the way to a city just to get an upgrade.
