Since the release of the E3 story trailer for Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red has been publishing a blog which examines the trailer frame-by-frame. The blog has yet to reach the trailer’s halfway mark, and each new entry delves deeper into the lore of Night City. Episode 05 of the blog looks at Cyberpunk 2077 technology; specifically, homemade tech developed by the city’s poorer residents.
Cyberpunk 2077 Technology: Mass-Produced & Handmade Tech
The fifth entry of CD Projekt Red’s frame-by-frame blog looks at technology; “In 2077, technology has become omnipresent.” it explains; “It’s used to automatize industry, bombard the masses with incessant advertising, replace human flesh and bone with circuitry and steel, and the list goes on.”
CD Projekt Red has already shown plenty of that tech in the game’s story trailer. Cybernetics are clearly widespread, and most characters feature some sort of implant or technological item. Even older objects like pool tables have received a high-tech upgrade in the form of holographic displays and so forth.
“While cheap electronic devices and services are available to even some of the poorest members of society,” continues the blog entry; “most cannot afford to buy the newest toys or replace broken equipment. As a result, from a young age many learn to improvise and work with discarded scrap to make repairs, to build their own diversions, to craft their own weapons.”
CD Projekt Red has yet to comment on any sort of weapon or item crafting system which may feature in the game. However, given that description of Night City’s tech, it seems likely that such a system could exist. It certainly seems likely that players can expect to encounter all manner of homemade tech as they explore Night City. Factions like criminal gangs could make use of custom cybernetic, weapons, robots, and more. It could be some time before fans see anything concrete about how all this tech will work in-game; CD Projekt Red has yet to announce a release date for the upcoming RPG.
