When Fallout: New Vegas released back in 2010, Obsidian Entertainment gave Fallout fans a very different cast of characters than had appeared in Fallout 3. New factions like the New California Republic and Great Khans were strikingly different to the Enclave and the Brotherhood of Steel who had dominated the previous title. However, perhaps the most distinctive of all were Caesar’s Legion. A new YouTube series has revealed, however, that the Fallout: New Vegas Legion actually suffered heavily from cuts. Huge chunks of their planned content had to be removed; partially due to the hardware limitations of consoles at the time.
The Fallout: New Vegas Legion Faction
A new YouTube series called The Cutting Room Floor recently debuted, and the first few videos to be released all delve into the background of Caesar’s Legion. Looking specifically at cut content, the series notes just how much was removed before the game’s release. It seems that one of the biggest problems for Obsidian was the limitations of the console generation at the time. A major mod for Fallout: New Vegas actually expands the Legion a great deal; The Frontier.
Obsidian’s big plans for the Fallout: New Vegas Legion never came to fruition. A big reason for this was that consoles weren’t able to handle a lot of what was planned. For example, the studio had planned for there to be larger-scale random battles between factions. Consoles at the time weren’t able to handle battles of this scale, however, and the idea was cut. Some of the early retail versions of the game still featured corpses and other markers at sites where these battles would have taken place.
The Legion was also planned to have a much larger role in the game’s story. The character of Alexus, for example, has the highest Charisma of any character in the faction. However, he plays little to no role in the story. Before his plans were cut, Alexus would have been a major NPC related to the Legion’s slave trade. Slave trading in general was planned to be a mechanic, but that system was also cut.
