David Gaider had been with BioWare for 17 years when he left the studio in 2016. One of the last games that he worked on was Dragon Age: Inquisition, where he worked his craft with the same artistry and magic as usual, which is how Dorian Pavus came to be. For those who aren’t aware, Dorian Pavus is a companion from Dragon Age: Inquisition who you can become closer to and romance and while romance isn’t everything, Dorian’s is pretty amazing.
The son of a Magister with a bloodline that is seeped with importance, Dorian is considered a pariah as his morals and ideals don’t line up with the rest of his family nor the rest of the general populace living in Tevinter. Because of that, and the fact that Dorian is a gay man, his family (particularly his father) try to commit a terrible act of blood magic in order to keep Dorian in line. It thankfully doesn’t work out, but Dorian is left with some serious emotional scars that you can talk about with him in-game.
And while it has been a long time since Dragon Age: Inquisition’s last DLC, Trespasser, was released and thus, Dorian’s whereabouts are relatively unknown for now, this new piece by Gaider will give some of his fans something new to devour as they wait for Dragon Age 4.
Of course, this piece isn’t seen as ‘canon” and Gaider himself acknowledges that the short story is only for a bit of fun. He states:
“This is purely fanfiction — a little story that planted itself in my head after a recent conversation over drinks, one which wouldn’t go away until I wrote it,” Gaider said. “Revisiting Dorian was both easier than I feared but harder than I’d imagined, so take this for what it’s worth… just a bit of time spent having fun with an old friend.”
