New York was once considered by Bethesda as a possible setting for a Fallout title, but thus far, they have yet to feature the sprawling cityscape in a game. In the meantime, a modder by the name of RoseRosenberg is working on a mod for Fallout 4 which features the city; entitled Fallout: New York. The modder recently shared a new progress update, showcasing screenshots of the irradiated cityscape.
The Fallout: New York Mod
For now, Fallout: New York is set exclusively around Central Park in Manhattan and its surrounding buildings. This includes the facade of the city’s Natural History Museum, but not the interior as of yet. According to RoseRosenberg, the modder first priority; “is to create the city around Central Park which will be closed for the moment. Then the city will be modified to be more destroyed with exploring places and enemy camps.” At present, Fallout: New York is still very much a work-in-progress mod; a fact that RoseRosenberg is clear to point out. “The representation of the city doesn’t look like the final version.” he explains; “It’s better with the mod: Winter Overhaul.”
For now, the mod lacks a great many things; there are no quests, mobs don’t move, and the destruction caused by the Great War mostly has yet to be implemented; RoseRosenberg is creating the city pre-destruction first, before modelling the destruction over that. Eventually, the modder is planning to add part of the New York subway system. They will also slowly expand the area district by city district. There is no release date as of yet for Fallout: New York, but the newly-released screenshots certainly look promising.
Most mods of this sort of scale tend to be the work of small teams. In this case; Fallout: New York seems to be the sole work of RoseRosenberg, meaning that progress could be slow. Of course, that does remain to be seen, and the work so far is definitely impressive.
