Fallout: New California Founder Interviewed About the Upcoming Mod

Fallout: New California is a long ongoing mod project for Fallout: New Vegas. Like other long-term content mods, New California is seeking to add a major new area with its own story, factions, and characters. The mod is due for release this coming October, after years in development. The founder and project lead of the mod, Brandan Lee, recently sat down with Windows Central to discuss New California.

Brandan Lee’s Comments About the Fallout: New California Mod

According to Lee, the hardest part about making Fallout: New California was actually assembling a team. Many mods tend to be the work of individuals, while there are a minority of much larger projects being worked on by teams. “Getting people to commit to doing the work for no pay and sticking to it,” explained Lee; “which is the hardest part of any mod, both for yourself and your volunteers… the odds are good you’ll end up alone frequently and it will take you many years on a project of this scale”. Nevertheless, Lee and his team appear to have beaten those odds. While many long-term mod projects have no announced release date, New California does, and it’s not far away.

Brandan Lee, Founder of Fallout New California, Says that Assembling the Team Was the Hardest Part

Asked about New California’s story, Lee gave a brief overview of what players can expect; “Fallout: New California adds an all new story around a new player character, an adopted resident of Vault 18. You’ll discover a pitched battle between the Survivalist Raiders, the New California Republic, and The Super Mutants, which shapes the politics and events leading to the NCR’s invasion of the Mojave. The story takes place in 2260; many years before the “Courier” awakes in New Vegas, while the Enclave struggles to rise again on the West Coast”.

Impressively, Lee also mentioned that there won’t be any enemies appearing from New Vegas. In fact, he states that; “there are no ‘enemies’ until you make them”. Essentially, the player will be free to choose a side in the setting’s ongoing conflict, thus making friends and enemies simultaneously. Although New California won’t introduce any new gameplay mechanics, the mod does feature a new dialogue system. In addition, the system for gaining PERKS is somewhat different. The mod even features its own original soundtrack, with two dozen radio tracks.
