Compulsion Games’ trippy dystopian survival game We Happy Few will launch later this week on August 10, allowing players to explore (and hopefully escape) the dangerous 1960’s British town of Wellington Wells as three distinct characters. After the game’s launch though, Compulsion plans to continue supporting We Happy Few with both free and paid DLC updates, the latter of which will be bundled together in a season pass.
According to this announcement post on We Happy Few’s Steam page, Compulsion plans to augment the game with both a free sandbox mode and three paid DLC packs. The sandbox mode will allow players to experience an endless variant of the default story experience in which they can adjust certain parameters such as the size of the town, the overall threat level of citizens, and how plentiful resources are. Compulsion says that sandbox mode will ideally be a way for players to experience the more freeform survival-driven gameplay scenario that the studio originally envisioned for We Happy Few.
As for the paid DLC packs, Compulsion has posted brief descriptions that seem to suggest DLC players will get to control new Wellington Wells citizens and even explore new parts of the town:
- Roger & James in: They Came From Below! – Precocious Roger and Impetuous James set off in search of adventure and love, only to uncover bizarre technology and a terrifying new threat. All is not as it seems. Or is it exactly as it seems?
- Lightbearer – Heartthrob, artist, and personal trainwreck, Nick Lightbearer is Wellington Wells’ most celebrated rock star—but what truly makes him tick? Tune in to Uncle Jack’s late show to find out.
- We All Fall Down – Much like any well-worn happy mask, all societies develop cracks in their veneer. But that doesn’t mean you should go digging up dirt from the past. Right? *pops a Joy pill* Right!
The above three DLC packs will all be included in We Happy Few’s season pass. Currently, the only way to get the season pass is by purchasing We Happy Few’s Deluxe Edition, but Compulsion has confirmed that when the game launches, interested buyers will be able to purchase the season pass separately.
Speaking of which, there’s still time to pre-order We Happy Few and score some neat pre-order bonuses in the process. If you’re not entirely sold on the premise behind We Happy Few, the game’s ABC’s of Happiness trailer provides a pretty convincing argument.
