Far Cry 5 is already the fastest-selling Far Cry title in the franchise’s history; the game’s first week sales were more than double those of the last entry in the series. Now, the game has helped Ubisoft claim the top spot for sales by becoming the best-selling title in March.
The data comes from the latest report from NPD, the industry-tracking firm; despite releasing on the 27th of March, the game became the top-selling title of the month on both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, outselling all of its competitors in just five days. The sales figures made Ubisoft the best-selling video game publisher of the year so far.
Far Cry 5 also managed to steal the top spot for sales in March from Sea of Thieves. It is unclear, however, whether data includes players who accessed Sea of Thieves via Microsoft Game Pass. Rare’s open-world pirate game did remarkably well for a title that was exclusive to the Xbox One and PC, but it is no surprise that an established franchise like Far Cry would sell well.
The top-selling titles console titles for March 2018 were as follows:
- Far Cry 5
- Sea of Thieves
- MLB 18: The Show
- Kirby Star Allies*
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Call of Duty: WWII
- Mario Kart 8*
- Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom
- NBA 2K18
- Monster Hunter: World
* Not including digital sales.
Whether Far Cry 5 can hold onto its top spot in the coming weeks remains to be seen, however. God of War has also experienced very strong sales, already overtaking Far Cry for the top spot in the UK. However, while God of War sales are strong, the title is also exclusive to the PlayStation 4. Given that Far Cry 5 is available on PC and Xbox One as well, SIE’s newest game may not be able to match Ubisoft’s figures in the end.
