We Happy Few Developer Comments on the In-Development Movie Adaptation

While We Happy Few developer Compulsion Games is focusing on correcting the game’s severe technical issues and preparing to begin work on the planned post-launch DLC, producer Sam Abbot still found time to touch on the long-in-gestation movie adaptation during a recent Reddit AMA.

You’d be forgiven for forgetting (or not even knowing in the first place) that there was a We Happy Few movie adaptation in the works since it was originally announced way back in March of 2017. Since then, there haven’t really been any major developments regarding the movie adaptation, but one fan couldn’t help but inquire during the AMA.

The We Happy Few movie is still in development.

Abbot, to his credit, offered up all that he knew about the planned movie version of We Happy Few, which was unsurprisingly not a whole lot. Since Compulsion Games has been busy for the past few years with, you know, making We Happy Few the game, it has been very hands-off when it comes to the movie:

“We had a producer team approach us during E3 2016, and we were a bit surprised at that. But we were more surprised when they organized an option deal so quickly. It’s not something we’re actively working on. We’re supporting their efforts as best we can, but in the end we see ourselves as a video game developer, not an empire builder.”

For now, all that’s known about the We Happy Few movie adaptation is that it’s being jointly produced by Gold Circle Entertainment (the same company behind the Pitch Perfect franchise), dj2 Entertainment, and Compulsion. The film doesn’t yet have a release window, a director, or any actors attached, and it doesn’t have an official plot synopsis, though it’s likely safe to assume that it will borrow heavily from the game upon which it is inspired.

Abbot’s statement may be somewhat disappointing for those who are excited to see We Happy Few on the silver screen, but at the very least it confirms that the film adaptation is still being worked on to some degree.
