There Won’t Be a New Assassin’s Creed Game in 2019

During this week’s ongoing Gamescom convention, Ubisoft confirmed that, similar to what happened in 2016, there won’t be any new Assassin’s Creed game releases in 2019.

Assassin's Creed will skip out on 2019.

In a Gamescom interview with Gamespot, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot revealed that both 2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins and this year’s upcoming release Assassin’s Creed Odyssey were developed in tandem with each other. To ensure that both the Assassin’s Creed IP and Odyssey in particular have enough time to “breathe,” Ubisoft will also be holding off on releasing any new Assassin’s Creed games in 2019, and potentially longer.

Here’s Guillemot’s full statement on the matter:

“On Assassin’s, we had a game [in 2018] and we have one this year, but we are not going to have a full-fledged Assassin’s next year. It’s just because the teams were working separately, so we have two games now, one year after the other. But next year you’re not going to have a fully fledged one.”

Guillemot then went on to clarify that there won’t be *any* new Assassin’s Creed games coming out in 2019, not even a spin-off title or a smaller side adventure. Another point to note is that Guillemot never outright said that a new game *will* be coming in 2020, though it’s unlikely that Ubisoft will let more than a single year go by without releasing a new mainline Assassin’s Creed entry.

Later on in the interview, Guillemot also discussed how Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which launches in just a short while on Oct. 5, will ultimately benefit from the lack of  a new game in 2019 since it means there will be more content coming to Odyssey:

“What you’ll have is lots of content coming on [Assassin’s Creed Odyssey]. The team really wants to give, on a regular basis, some new possibilities for play, so when you get [Odyssey] this year, you’re going to get in for a couple of years, actually.”

Ubisoft undoubtedly has some big content plans for Odyssey, though it has been previously confirmed that those plans won’t include any sort of multiplayer battle royale experience. Fans will, however, be able to reverse the game’s box art to display their preferred protagonist should they buy a physical copy.
