During this week’s ongoing Gamescom convention, Destiny 2 developer Bungie unveiled a brand new trailer which shows one of the in-game cinematics that will be featured in next month’s Forsaken expansion. Specifically, the cinematic depicts the stylish final stand, and grim ultimate fate, of the beloved Hunter Exo Cayde-6.
Interestingly enough, the events depicted in the cinematic play out a bit differently from what was shown in the E3 story trailer. The Gamescom trailer picks up right after Cayde has been separated from the player’s Guardian and Petra Venj (assumedly after the conclusion of a playable story mission early on in the expansion). As Cayde gets his bearings, he suddenly realizes he’s not alone as the Scorn Barons, a series of powerful new adversaries whom Cayde had previously locked up in the Prison of Elders, show up to enact vengeance on their former captor.
Cayde does his best to fight off the Barons and their footsoldiers, but even with his trusty Ace of Spades revolver he is eventually worn down. When he tries to call on his Ghost to help, one of the Barons snipes his Ghost out of the air, destroying it and triggering a Light shockwave which signifies that Cayde is no longer benefiting from the Traveler’s protection. Cayde, to his credit, greets his impending death with his usual bravado, even as the Scorn Barons move in to finish the job.
The cinematic doesn’t confirm whether or not Forsaken’s main antagonist, the traitorous Awoken prince Uldren Sov, is the one who ultimately snuffs Cayde-6 out for good, but it does reinforce a notion that Bungie has been playing up for quite some time now: Cayde-6’s fate is sealed, and he likely won’t be coming back.
Players will be able to avenge Cayde-6 when Destiny 2’s Forsaken expansion launches on Sep. 4.
