In just a few days, on August 28 to be exact, Bungie will deploy a massive new update for Destiny 2 which will bring the game up to version 2.0 and help to pave the way for the Sep. 4 launch of the game’s Forsaken expansion. The 2.0 update will tweak several core systems ahead of Forsaken proper, allowing Destiny 2 players to acclimate to the expansion’s new economy and social changes among other things. It also turns out that fans of the game’s sword weapons will have incentive to boot up the 2.0 update as well.

Bungie community manager dmg04 recently confirmed via Twitter that all Destiny 2 swords will receive buffs to their ammo reserves and damage mitigation from blocking when the 2.0 update goes live. This has been a long-requested boon from players who enjoyed the idea of using swords but who were ultimately disappointed by the tradeoffs of taking a blade into battle rather than a rocket launcher or some other heavy weapon. Both of the planned sword changes will naturally benefit players who prefer to mix it up in Destiny 2’s Crucible PvP playlists, but PvE players will assuredly feel the benefits as well.

The ammo changes should be of particular interest to PvE players since, even in PvE, the low ammo count of most swords made them a very risky weapon to take into battle, especially since effectively utilize them already involves putting yourself directly into harm’s way. There will undoubtedly still be times when a rocket launcher or a sniper rifle is hands down the better heavy weapon pick, but swords will at least be just as viable as their long-range brethren when the situation warrants.
Along with changes to existing Destiny 2 systems, the Forsaken expansion will include plenty of new content for players to test themselves against, sword in hand if they prefer.
