Fans excited for the upcoming release of Cyberpunk 2077 have now gotten their first look at actual gameplay footage. During the 48-minute gameplay demo, CD Projekt Red showcased a great deal of the game’s mechanics, including combat, dialogue choices, and branching storylines. One aspect which was not clearly shown in the demo, however, was the Cyberpunk 2077 progression system.
The Cyberpunk 2077 Progression System
The recently released Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay demo drew attention to several major features. However, it did not give a clear look at the progression system itself; how players improve their character’s abilities as they progress. It did show gameplay comparing a much higher-level character to that of a lower-level one, but it didn’t show exactly how much the difference between the two was. It’s entirely possible that CD Projekt Red is still finalising the layout and design for the progression system in the menu; thus, they might not want to show something so unfinished. However, during a recent CD Projekt Red Q&A, Game Designer Philip Weber addressed the Cyberpunk 2077 progression system.

Weber drew the comparison between the Cyberpunk system and that of The Witcher 3; “Compared to The Witcher,” he explains; “we have much more freedom on what these skills can do and how varied they can be, in Witcher 3 all the skills had to make sense to what Geralt, a witcher, can do. Having this freedom also means that now we can solve quests in many more different ways.”
Weber also warned fans that the game will not have a “game over state”. While players can fail quests, they will then have to live with the consequences. “Yes, you can fail quests. What we don’t have however is a game over state, the only game over that you will get is when you die. So when you fail a quest then it’s now part of the story, you have to deal with the consequences.”
