In a couple of months’ time, Cyberpunk 2077 is set to feature as the focus of the November issue of Edge magazine. The cover for the upcoming issue was released online earlier this week, followed by a variety of details from different interviews and content set to feature in the issue. Among those details was the fact that the Cyberpunk 2077 setting of Night City will involve no procedural generation.
CD Projekt Red Won’t Use Procedural Generation for the Cyberpunk 2077 Setting
According to one of the CD Projekt Red representatives to whom Edge spoke; the studio actually refuses to use any form of procedural generation. This includes in both the Cyberpunk 2077 setting and also in the game’s quests. This is seemingly to ensure that the game is a bespoke experience from start to finish. Certainly, there did not appear to be any procedural generation in The Witcher 3, so this may well be a longstanding policy at CD Projekt Red.

Developers interviewed by Edge were clear that every side-quest should be a complete experience on par with the main quest; “We want to make sure that every quest feels like a complete story in and of itself”. They also revealed that the backstory decisions made during character creation would actually influence which side-quests appear in the game. This should be welcome news to fans looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077. Neither setting nor quests will feature any procedural generation. This seems to indicate that there will not be any Radiant Quests, of the sort which feature in Fallout 4.
Among the other aspects discussed in the upcoming issue of Edge were the game’s animation system, which was created from scratch for the game. The issue also features an interview with CD Projekt Red producer Richard Borzymowski. He gave fans some insight into the studio’s creative process. In addition, he also gave his opinion on the success of the studio. According to Borzymowski, the success of CD Projekt Red is down to the fact that it is “unafraid of change.”
