Hunting is a major gameplay component in Red Dead Redemption 2. Players can use the materials gained from hunting animals to keep themselves fed and craft useful items. If, however, you want to obtain some of the game’s most coveted items, you’ll have to hunt Legendary Animals. These near-mythical beasts naturally won’t go down with a fight, plus you’ll have to find them first. In this guide, we’ll outline all of Red Dead Redemption 2’s Legendary Animals along with their in-game locations.
Legendary Animals can prove to be quite a challenge, so don’t get discouraged if the hunt doesn’t go your way. If you want to upgrade your equipment before the hunt, our guide on making money fast can help. We also covered how to unlock the fishing activity if that’s more your speed.
As is noted below, Legendary Animals always appear in the same locations. However, in some cases you’ll need to meet specific criteria before they appear in the open world.
Where to find Red Dead Redemption 2 Legendary Animals
Legendary Grizzly Bear
The odds are good that this is the first Legendary Animal you’ll encounter. The Legendary Grizzly Bear makes a scripted appearance in the Chapter 2 mission Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego. It is technically possible to kill the Legendary Grizzly Bear during this appearance, but it’s not required. If you’d rather wait, the bear can be found in Grizzlies East even after the mission concludes.
Legendary Buck
The Legendary Buck is found in the mountain range northwest of the town of Strawberry.
Legendary Boar
You’ll have to reach the Lemoyne region before you can find the Legendary Boar. Once you’re there, you’ll find the animal in Bluewater Marsh which is north of the town of Lagras.
Legendary Elk
Head on up to the northernmost section of the in-game map, to the Ambarino Region. The Legendary Elk is located due east of Bacchus Station.
Legendary Fox
There’s a small body of water called Mattock Pond just to the north of the town of Rhodes. The pond is where the Legendary Fox makes its home.
Legendary Bull Gator
The massive Legendary Bull Gator won’t appear until you finish the Chapter 4 mission Country Pursuits. Once the mission is finished, you’ll find the gator in Bayou Nwa, north of Saint Denis.
Legendary Ram
Head west out of the town of Valentine and you’ll reach Cattail Pond, the home of the Legendary Ram.
Legendary Beaver
Start at the Van Horn Trading Post and head west until you reach Butcher Creek. The Legendary Beaver is found just southwest of the creek itself.
Legendary Cougar
Head west from the town of Tumbleweed and you’ll eventually reach Gaptooth Ridge. The Legendary Cougar has made the ridge its hunting grounds.
Legendary Coyote
You’ll find the Legendary Coyote in Scarlett Meadows which is northwest of Rhodes and southeast of the Old Mill.
Legendary White Bison
There are two Legendary Bison in the game and the first is the Legendary White Bison. Head to Lake Isabella in Grizzlies West and you should find the first Legendary Bison.
Legendary Tatanka Bison
The second Legendary Bison is found in New Austin. Travel southeast from the McFarlane Ranch in Hennigan’s Stead and you’ll find the Legendary Tatanka Bison.
Legendary Pronghorn
For reference, pronghorn refers to an antelope. You’ll find the Legendary Pronghorn in Rio Del Lobo Rock which is due east of Fort Mercer in New Austin.
Legendary Wolf
The Legendary Wolf is found in Cotorra Springs. You can find the springs by west from Bacchus Bridge in Ambarino.
Legendary Moose
Head on up to Roanoke Ridge in the northeastern section of the map. It’s here that you’ll find the Legendary Moose.
Legendary Panther
The Legendary Panther won’t appear until you’ve worked your way up to rank 9 of the Master Hunter challenge. Once you’ve done so, head west from Shady Belle in Lemoyne to find the panther’s hunting grounds.
