Like we mentioned, there are a couple of reasons why this problem is happening to you. The first is pretty simple. Veteran players may be expecting to be able to use the system and it’s not. That could be because you have yet to unlock the system yet. The game has an hour and a half to two hours long first chapter that is essentially a tutorial.

One of the missions that you do in this first chapter unlocks it and lets you use it by pressing down on the right thumbstick. You can also tag enemies with the RB/R1 button while in Dead Eye. If you’re way past chapter one and still have the issue, there is a reason for this, too. The whole game revolves around cores. The cores are the heart symbol and others that are in the bottom left corner.

While the circle around the symbol indicates your current health level and so on, the symbol in the middle is your ability to regenerate. Dead Eye regenerates a little slower so you may have to wait a bit for it to replenish. However, if your core becomes empty and grayed out, it won’t regenerate at all. This will require you to use a tonic or other nourishment to replenish the core.
