I know what you’re thinking. How could Io Interactive possibly implement a competitive PvP mode into a game like Hitman 2? After all, the entire point of the game is operating as a lone silent assassin in a sea of NPC’s. Having players try to eliminate each other wouldn’t be much fun, so instead Io found another route. In Hitman 2’s Ghost Mode, two players compete to see who can more efficiently eliminate a series of random targets.
How Does Ghost Mode Work?
At first, Ghost Mode takes a little effort to fully wrap your head around. The basic premise is that two players start at the same location and are given the same randomly assigned targets. Both players also start out with absolutely no equipment, forcing them to make do with whatever they can find. Thankfully, special “ghost crates” are placed around the level and contain helpful items like disguises or tools.
The first player to kill five targets wins the match, but you can’t just sprint through the level haphazardly. If anyone witnesses your kill or discovers the body shortly after, it doesn’t count. However, if your opponent successfully eliminates a target, you only have 20 seconds to match the kill. This means you have to carefully balance patience with opportunity. Act too hastily, and you’ll blow your kill attempts. Wait too long though, and your opponent’s advantage becomes all the harder to overcome.
As of this writing, Ghost Mode is only available in Hitman 2’s Miami, U.S.A map. A future game update will enable Ghost Mode play for the game’s other locations. Completing Ghost Mode matches awards the same profile XP you earn in the story campaign and Sniper Assassin. This means that Ghost Mode can serve as more than just a fun distraction between story missions.
