Fallout 76 Side Quests: How to Complete Tracking Unknowns

The Fallout 76 Tracking Unknowns side quest will take you from Harpers Ferry to Dyer Chemical, and several locations in-between. The quest spans much of The Mire, and though it isn’t the quickest quest, it does offer some particularly nice rewards. Namely, players who complete Tracking Unknowns gain a unique weapon called the Pyrolyzer, a modded flamer.

How to Complete the Fallout 76 Tracking Unknowns Side Quest

Starting the Fallout 76 Tracking Unknowns quest is relatively easy. As you approach Harpers Ferry for the first time, you should receive a miscellaneous quest called “Investigate Harpers Ferry”; once you get this, make your way into the settlement, keeping one eye open for Scorched and Super Mutants. Bear in mind that the minimum recommended level for this area is 30. The miscellaneous quest should mark three different terminals around the derelict town; go to any one of these and read the “Missing Persons,” topic, then select “Missing Hunting Party.”

With that topic selected, you should begin Tracking Unknowns proper. Your first objective is to head southeast, following the course of the river, until you reach a spot just north of Valley Galleria. Search the forest in this area until you find a Mister Gutsy called “Hardball,” whom you can speak to. Hardball was accompanying a previous hunting party, and will give you your next task; finding a Signal Booster. There are two of these which are marked on the map, and you can retrieve either one. The first is in Valley Galleria, while the second is in Harpers Ferry. Of the two, the one in Valley Galleria should be easier to get. Plus, the area is conveniently close. Expect to face robots and scorched, but likely less resistance than in Harpers Ferry.

Once you have the Signal Booster, you’ll need to make your way to Camp Venture, which is southwest of Valley Galleria, and due south of Harpers Ferry. Once you clear out the ghouls, access the control terminal and use it to call in a cargobot. This robot will arrive shortly and land on the helipad, allowing you to attach the Signal Booster. Once it takes off again, you’ll be able to use your Pip-Boy to listen to a new Distress Beacon radio station.

The Distress Beacon and Dyer Chemical

You can track the location of the Distress Beacon by watching its signal strength via an indicator on the top left corner of your HUD. After a walk, you should find it at the base of the red and white metal tower, on the north side of the river that runs through the Mire. The beacon lies next to a dead body; retrieve Randy’s Holotape from their inventory and listen. Nearby, you should find a derelict car and the body of Nari Samir. She has three items you need; Nari’s Holotape, a Dyer Chemical ID Card, and in a backpack next to her, a Prototype Hazmat Suit. With everything on your person, it’s time to head for Dyer Chemical.

Keep following the river north through the Mire and you should eventually come to this large chemical plant. Expect to find plenty of ghouls and robots inside. However, you don’t want to head in through the main entrance. Instead, you can find a hatch to enter via the large pipes on the western side of the site. Inside, use Nari’s Dyer Chemical ID Card to access the Dyer Chemical Sewer, then follow the route to the control room. Here, you’ll find another body and you can retrieve the final holotape; Lucy’s Holotape. Doing so will complete the quest.

For completing Tracking Unknowns, you’ll receive random ammo and aid items. You’re also guaranteed to receive RadAway. Most importantly, however, you’ll receive the Pyrolyzer; a unique modded flamer!
