It’s actually slightly different than getting it in the main game so it can be a bit confusing. How to Get Red Dead Online Varmint Rifle
First and foremost, we can confirm that you can get the Varmint Rifle in Red Dead Online. How you do it, though, is like we said slightly different than in the story mode. For one, there is a requirement you must meet before you can even unlock the ability to receive it. Rockstar Games decided to gate many of the weapons and other items behind your level.
Your rank in Red Dead Online is crucial to unlocking most items. This is the same case as with the Red Dead Online Varmint Rifle. You will need to have reached at least rank eight with your character in order to unlock this rifle. This is actually pretty easy to do. For instance, we were already at rank four when we beat the prologue missions.
For reaching rank eight, we recommend just queueing up for other player’s story missions through the player menu. That menu can be accessed by pressing left on the D-Pad. However, you don’t get the Red Dead Online Varmint Rifle from reaching rank eight. You only unlock the ability to purchase it. You’ll have to visit the local gunsmith to buy it then.
