Fallout 76 Main Quests #16: How to Complete Back to Basic

After you complete the Defiance Has Fallen quest and learn the fate of the Brotherhood of Steel, you have the option of undertaking the Fallout 76 Back to Basic quest. Although this quest is technically part of the main quest-line, it is optional, and can be undertaken in-between Defiance Has Fallen and the next quest; Recruitment Blues. The quest will prepare you for joining the Brotherhood of Steel at Camp McClintock.

How to Complete the Fallout 76 Back to Basics Main Quest

As you approach Camp McClintock on your way to start Recruitment Blues, you’ll pick up a miscellaneous quest; “Start Your Training at Camp McClintock.” This quest will guide you to the Fallout 76 Back to Basic quest. Once you speak with Master Sergeant Gutsy in the camp, you need to collect your new uniform. Head down to the foyer on the first floor and retrieve the Uniform Disbursement Log on the desk. This will mark the location of a Uniform Voucher. This item will be somewhere in the camp barracks, but its exact location is random.

Once you retrieve the voucher, return to the foyer and use it to get your uniform from the Uniform Dispenser. This will give you Dirty Army Fatigues and a Dirty Army Helmet. Equip these new items and then return to Master Sergeant Gutsy. The robot will direct you to complete three training courses for your Brotherhood of Steel basic training. These consist of Agility, Marksmanship, and Patriotism. The three can be done in any order.

The Agility Training Course

When you reach the Agility course, use the training terminal and hit the “Begin Course,” option. This will give you a 2-minute time limit to complete the Agility course. You need to make it through the course as quickly as possible while hitting each of the buttons along the way. These have to be done in order, but overall this course shouldn’t be too tough.

The Marksmanship Training Course

Just like the Agility course, you need to complete the objectives within a time limit. This time, you have just 30 seconds to hit all of the targets on the practice range. There’s no required weapon here, you can use whatever you want; as such, feel free to use explosives, automatic weapons, even the gatling gun you got from completing Defiance Has Fallen!

The Patriotism Training Course

This bizarre training course requires you to spot potential communist threats to America. Simply investigate each of the three rooms and decide which one of them is a “Commie.” This isn’t even remotely difficult. The three rooms belong to Jimmy, Topher, and Jianjun; you figure it out.

Once you’ve completed all three training courses, you need to tackle the camp’s live-fire training ground. This area lies southwest of Camp McClintock. Here you’ll be challenged to defeat three waves of supposedly “Communist” robots; don’t expect to see Liberators here, just American robots painted red. Destroy all three waves and then return to Master Sergeant Gutsy to complete the quest.
