Battlefield V’s Developers Aren’t Ruling Out A Battle Royale Mode Just Yet

DICE and Electronic Arts revealed our first look at the upcoming entry in the Battlefield series, Battlefield V, today. During an official livestream reveal, fans got a look at the first gameplay trailer, surprising new developments, and a whole lot more information surrounding the game. Curiously missing from the announcement, however, was any sort of battle royale mode. That was pretty surprising for anyone looking for one considering Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will have its own, but according to developer DICE, we shouldn’t rule it out just yet.

DICE senior producer Andreas Morrel explained that the studio is looking into how that sort of gameplay mode could end up fitting into the Battlefield series, and how it might work eventually for Battlefield V. Morrel said that, currently, DICE has nothing significant to announce in terms of a battle royale mode at this time, but he stated that it could potentially work well for Battlefield as a whole. “It’s hard to miss the battle royale frenzy that’s ongoing,” he said. “We’re all very much fans of it, back at DICE, and we’re definitely looking to see how Battlefield can explore the battle royale genre.”

DICE creative director Lars Gustavsson also mentioned that there are those within the company who believe that battle royale would even be a “perfect fit” for Battlefield as a whole, and that it has been a hot button for discussion around the company. According to a GameSpot interview with Andreas Morrel, the team stated “We’ve got the sandbox, we’ve got the vehicles, we’ve got the epic scale — battle royale is a natural fit for us.”

It would certainly make sense for Battlefield to eventually incorporate some sort of battle royale mode, but it doesn’t look like that’s currently in the cards for the game at present. If it does end up being added, we’ll likely see it in some kind of content update further on down the line. It would be prudent for DICE to see how Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Blackout mode is received by fans before starting work on its own, just in case it doesn’t go over as well as it seems it might. The battle royale genre is currently dominated by PUBG and Fortnite, and it’ll be pretty difficult to break into.
