Fortnite’s Limited Time Mode ‘Close Encounters’ Has Been Taken Offline Temporarily

Fortnite’s newest limited time mode Close Encounters has been taken offline, just about an hour after going live in-game. Talk about a super, super limited-time mode, right? Epic Games tweeted the news via the official Fortnite Twitter account, noting that the mode had some sort of “issue” that had forced the developer to disable the mode while the team investigates. Solid Gold has been activated in the interim, while players wait for Epic Games to bring Close Encounters back online.

Close Encounters was meant for players to get a chance at trying the new jetpack that was just added to Fortnite, as it replaces all the game’s weapons with shotguns and increases the probability of the jetpack spawning. So essentially you’ll have players running around with a bunch of shotguns and jetpacks — hence the name “close encounters.” In short, things were going to go “boom” a whole lot more than usual.

It’s not been disclosed what kind of problems the mode had ran into to get Epic Games to take it offline so quickly, but the Fortnite subreddit revealed quite a few problems, like the wrong ammo spawning, the solo queue option completely disappearing, and a smattering of other issues. Whatever the case may be, Epic Games will make sure all is well before launching the game mode again.

Solid Gold mode means that players have a higher chance of finding loot like the Hand Cannon and Suppressed Pistols in floor loot, Assault Rifle, Minigun, and Sniper Rifle in chests, and the Rocket and Grenade Launcher in supply drops. In short, it’s a good time to go out seeing what you can find in-game if you were hoping to get some time in with Close Encounter today. There isn’t currently an end time in sight for Solid Gold, so make sure you get it in while you still can.
