Hardcore Roguelike Darkest Dungeon Is Getting a Sequel

Darkest Dungeon developer Red Hook Studios has announced it is making a proper sequel. Details are scarce at the moment but Red Hook has released an official teaser trailer to stoke fan excitement. The studio also confirmed that the sequel will have an early access launch ahead of its full release.

An official title for the sequel hasn’t yet been confirmed. However, the below teaser trailer hints strongly that it will simply be labeled as ‘Darkest Dungeon 2.’ The trailer doesn’t include any actual gameplay but it does hint at a few new and returning features. It looks like the sequel will be at least partially set in a snowy mountain environment. The six core classes from the first game, Highwayman, Leper, Plague Doctor, Hellion, Robber, and Man-at-Arms, also appear to be returning.

In an announcement interview with PC Gamer, Red Hook’s Tyler Sigman and Chris Bourassa also teased a few additional details. According to Sigman and Bourassa, the sequel will include a “tuned up” combat system and a restructured metagame. Again, the two couldn’t divulge specifics, but they assured fans that the hardcore nature of the series will remain intact:

“Our combat system is making a return, but we’re giving it a significant tune-up—mechanically, and in terms of presentation. Most significantly, however, we are working with a completely different metagame structure. Darkest Dungeon 2 is a game about enduring a grueling journey, not cleaning up your backyard.”

Red Hook isn’t quite ready to announce a release window or specific platforms for Darkest Dungeon 2. Of course, the fact that the studio is prepping for early access means fans can expect a PC version at the least. The original Darkest Dungeon was also eventually ported over to consoles so other platforms shouldn’t be ruled out either. Fans who want to be kept in the know can sign up for Red Hook’s mailing list.
