Fans have been torn over the past weeks over whether the name of the upcoming Battlefield title is Battlefield 5 with a roman numeral or Battlefield V where V stands up for something else. DICE and Electronic Arts shed some light to the matter, revealing that the Battlefield V name stands up for Victory.
The news about the Battlefield V name comes from the game’s Twitter page, where the latest post indicates that it is a representation of the V hand sign used during World War 2 as a symbol of Victory.
Discussions over at Reddit was looking into the possibility of the Battlefield V name being the “V for Victory” sign and as it turns out, fans were right. The aforementioned Twitter post reads:
“[V hand sign] represents “V for Victory”. The phrase and sign were popularized by Winston Churchill and used amongst the allies for much of WWII. It’s also why we chose to use the Roman numeral V instead of the number 5 for the title.”
As we mentioned before, the two-finger “V” gesture has been first used during World War 2 by a Belgian politician, even if we have it tied to hippies and peace quotes. The sign was used as a symbol of unity among the allied nations against Nazis so if the theory is true then we might be playing the game from the eyes of the allied union.
The wikipedia page for the V hand sign reads that by July 1941, the emblematic use of the letter V had spread through occupied Europe. On 19 July, Prime Minister Winston Churchill referred approvingly to the V for Victory campaign in a speech, from which point he started using the V hand sign.
Summing up, we’re now sure what the Battlefield V name stands up for and that when the game releases, saying “I’m going to play some Battlefield 5” won’t do the trick. This is a good change for the Battlefield franchise and a nice message to push on to fans all over the world.
