For many gamers, a dream has finally come true today. Temtem is an MMORPG that is blatantly and confidently inspired by Pokemon, and it has launched its Kickstarter today. For all you gamers who have spent the last couple of decades collecting, trading, and battling monsters will be happy to know that there is a game that lets you do all of that and more alongside dozens of other Trainers.
Temtem is basically everything you would want in a Pokemon MMO without the signature appearances from copyrighted characters like Pikachu and Eevee. In it, you customize your own character and set out on a journey across six distinct islands in the Airborne Archipelago region in order to defeat a mysterious and evil group called Clan Belsato.
Along the way, you’ll capture and train many monsters as you also take down the eight Dojo leaders; a clear homage to Gym Leaders in the Pokemon series. The exact number of monsters hasn’t been revealed just yet but each of the designs that can be easily seen on the game’s Kickstarter look unique and carry a style that is wholly their own. None of the monsters or Temtems as they’re called are blatant rip-offs of the Pokemon we’ve come to know and love.
Combat is turn-based as you’d expect, but with an emphasis on two versus two. You’ll typically have a team of six Temtems that you will use to battle, taking advantage of the 12 elements and their associated weaknesses. Among those elements are the usuals that you’d expect like fire, nature (grass), and water, but there are some interesting ones like crystal and digital.
Being that it is an MMO, Temtem will have you seeing other “Tamers” around you constantly as you explore the six islands. It isn’t just for show, though, as you will be able to cooperate and fight alongside and against other Tamers in battles at any time. On top of all that, there are other nice features like customizable housing, a fully-fleshed out story campaign, and deep competitive battles.
Temtem is available for backing right now on Kickstarter. At the time of publishing, it has 33 days left in its campaign with a goal of $70,000 USD. The game is scheduled to launch in Early Access in September 2019 with a full release in May 2020. It has a stretch goal of $250,000 that will see it come to Nintendo Switch in addition to PC. For more info on the game, keep it locked right here or head to its Kickstarter to see it in action.
