Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma Series is Getting a Netflix Anime Adaptation

Netflix has announced it is developing an animated series based on Capcom’s award-winning action-RPG Dragon’s Dogma. The announcement is part of a larger push from Netflix to develop more animated shows for its original programming lineup.

The Dragon’s Dogma animated series is being developed by animation studio Sublimation. Sublimation has a lot of experience producing partial CGI and cell-shaded sequences for larger works. However, as Sublimation’s Representatives Director Atsushi Koishikawa recently explained in a Netflix press release, this is its first solo project:

“Sublimation team has long dreamt of working on our own title. We have oftentimes worked with partner studios to create partial CGI portions within a given title, so we feel very fortunate to work with Netflix through this production line deal. We’re excited to bring our unique cell shaded animation that carries hand-drawn textures to anime fans around the world.”

The Netflix release also included a brief synopsis of Sublimation’s Dragon’s Dogma animated series. Judging by the synopsis, the series will hew closely to the plot of the game:

“Based on a world-famous action RPG set in an open world, Dragon’s Dogma from CAPCOM will be brought to life as a Netflix original anime series. The story follows a man’s journey seeking revenge on a dragon who stole his heart. On his way, the man is brought back to life as an ‘Arisen’. An action adventure about a man challenged by demons who represent the seven deadly sins of humans.”

Personally, I don’t remember fighting demons who represent the seven deadly sins during my time with Dragon’s Dogma. It has been a while since I last played it, though, so I might just be misremembering. I’ll also get to refresh my memory next month when Dragon’s Dogma launches for the Nintendo Switch.

A release date for the upcoming series hasn’t been confirmed yet, but hopefully Netflix has a 2019 timetable in mind. While we wait, there are plenty of other RPG titles to sample including The Elder Scrolls Online.
