Deus Ex and Elder Scrolls Were Apparently Inspirations for Cyberpunk 2077
Originally based on the Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop roleplaying game, the upcoming sci-fi RPG Cyberpunk 2077 has a lot of different influences. While most of these are known only to the developers, the game’s Quest Director recently revealed one of them; the Deus Ex series of games. According to
Mateusz Tomaskiewicz, was one of several inspirations, including Elder Scrolls.
How Deus Ex Inspired the Design of Cyberpunk 2077
CD Projekt Red Quest Director Mateusz Tomaskiewicz recently spoke with Spanish news outlet AreaJugones. During the interview, he spoke at length about Cyberpunk 2077, including stating that the game will look “quite different” to the E3 gameplay demo shown last year. During the interview, Tomaskiewicz was asked about his inspirations when it came to Cyberpunk 2077.
“I would say the Deus Ex franchise,” he said; “especially the original Deus Ex. This one had a great impact on me as a developer and player back when I played it for the first time many years ago. And what I really liked about that game was completing the missions in many ways. It was not only based on dialogue decisions, since you also had the things that were on the map and its different points of entry that allowed you to get into buildings, as well as elements that opened different paths in history.”
It’s easy to see the parallels. Of course, the Cyberpunk 2077 and Deus Ex games approach futuristic cybernetics and other parts of the genre differently. However, there’s nonetheless some obvious aesthetic similarities. Certainly, fans of the Deus Ex series no doubt won’t be surprised to hear that it was an inspiration. Tomaskiewicz also named the Elder Scrolls games as an inspiration, as well as Vampire Bloodlines, which is soon due to get a long-overdue sequel.
At present, it’s unknown when fans will hear more about Cyberpunk 2077… until June, that is. CD Projekt Red have said that this year’s E3 will be their biggest appearance ever; hinting at a major Cyberpunk 2077 presence at the event. Certainly, fans might finally get a release date for the upcoming game!
