The Original Devil May Cry Is Coming To Nintendo Switch

The 2019 summer season just got a whole lot hotter. Capcom has announced that Nintendo Switch owners will be able to rack up their very own SSS combos before long. The original stylish action-platformer Devil May Cry is coming to Nintendo’s newest console at an as-yet-revealed date.

Devil May Cry Nintendo Switch Release

Devil May Cry Nintendo Switch port

Capcom revealed the Nintendo Switch version of Devil May Cry via a surprise Twitter announcement. The announcement is light on details, but it does confirm the Switch port is slated for a summer release. This will mark the very first time a Devil May Cry game is released on a Nintendo platform. The series began as a PlayStation exclusive before eventually making its way over to Xbox and, much later, PC.

As always it’s important to keep expectations in check, but some fans can’t help considering the possibilities. Capcom hasn’t confirmed whether the Switch port is the original Devil May Cry or its more recent HD remaster. Either way, though, it could potentially lead to additional ports for Devil May Cry 2 (eh) or 3 (yes, please).

Dante In Super Smash Bros.?

The implications of a Devil May Cry Switch port even go beyond the DmC series itself. Super Smash Bros. fans may remember this VG24/7 interview with DmC series lead Hideaki Itsuno. When Bayonetta (another creation of DmC architect Hideki Kamiya) showed up in Smash Bros, fans began to wonder. Could DmC protagonist Dante be next?

Itsuno was quoted as saying that Dante would need to make a more formal appearance on the Nintendo Switch first. Well, it doesn’t really get more formal than the inaugural adventure that kicked off Dante’s demon-slaying career. Nothing has been confirmed as of this writing, but the possibilities certainly just became a lot more intriguing.

So far, only one of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s four planned DLC characters has been released (Persona 5’s Joker). Nintendo has also said before that each DLC character will be a guest fighter hailing from a never-before-used series. Again, Devil May Cry’s Dante fits that mold perfectly, only adding fuel to the hype fires. Will Dante finally make his Smash Bros. debut? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Speaking of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the game recently outpaced the Wii U in sales. As for the Devil May Cry series, it’s doing quite well also.
