The arrival of Madden NFL 20 is just a few months away, as fans anticipate whether the newest title can top the 2018-19 edition. When the game arrives, it will feature at least one trick play not seen before in the game. That’s none other than the Philadelphia Eagles’ “Philly Special,” which will be a part of the Madden NFL 20 playbooks.
What is the Eagles’ Philly Special?
The Philly Special is a trick play straight out of the Philadelphia Eagles’ playbook which was famously executed in Super Bowl LII. Eagles’ QB Nick Foles and the Eagles were taking on Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. On one play before halftime, Foles asked head coach Doug Pederson if he wanted to go with the play. Pederson agreed with his quarterback. From there, the rest is history as Foles initially lined up as QB before moving to the side as he continued to call out signals.
As seen in the YouTube highlight video above, Foles went from quarterback to receiver on that Philly Special. Soon after he shifted to the other position he ran a short route to the end zone. Tight end Trey Burton became the QB and threw to Foles who scored an important touchdown for his team. The play soon became talked about as part of the key to the Eagles’ strategic win against the NFL’s greatest dynasty of the modern era.
Philly Special in Madden NFL 20 Playbooks
Since it became famous in the real NFL, it makes perfect sense that the Philly Special will join Madden NFL 20 playbooks. The upcoming game will mark the debut of the play in EA Sports’ game. The Philadelphia Eagles made the big announcement on the team’s official Twitter account.
During the Eagle Eye in the Sky podcast episode, Fran Duffy talked to EA Sports game designer Anthony White about a number of topics involving Madden. White works extensively on the Madden playbooks and has been involved with the game since Madden 14. So when teams bring in new coaches each season, White is the man tasked with making sure the Madden NFL game is close to what the team is using for plays.
White mentioned on the podcast that the Eagles’ trick play will be a part of the new game. There will be a Philly Special and a Fake Philly Special available for the Eagles to call. Other teams will have a play called “Philly,” since other teams began to run the popular toss to the quarterback.
Philadelphia Eagles fans won’t have Nick Foles or Trey Burton to use for the trick play when the new game arrives, though. Foles officially joined the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent to quarterback there. Meanwhile, Burton will now catch passes from Mitchell Trubisky for the Chicago Bears.
The Madden NFL 20 game is set to arrive on August 2 everywhere. However, gamers can pre-order Madden 20 special editions to receive the game three days earlier.
