This fall, Bungie will be converting the base Destiny 2 experience into a free-to-play game called Destiny 2: New Light. The New Light version will allow any interested player to try the game out free of charge. However, some fans were confused about what is and isn’t included in the New Light version. Thankfully, Bungie has posted a handy FAQ which answers pertinent New Light questions.
Destiny 2 New Light FAQ
Bungie posted the FAQ in this recent weekly blog post. According to the FAQ, New Light won’t be a separate client, nor will it require a separate download. All existing Destiny 2 players will be automatically converted to New Light once it launches. Existing players will also retain all prior purchases and content unlocks (expansions, Silver purchases, etc.).
As for what new F2P players can experience, the list is surprisingly extensive. Once New Light is live, a brand new player could log in and play the following entirely free of charge:
- All Red War, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind content
- Free roam for all Forsaken patrol zones (Tangled Shore and Dreaming City)
- Strike playlists
- Crucible playlists
- Gambit and Gambit Prime playlists
- Select Annual Pass content
If a New Light player purchases the Forsaken expansion upgrade, they’ll unlock access to the following:
- The Forsaken story campaign
- All Year 2 raids and dungeons
- Annual Pass-exclusive Exotic weapon quests
There are certain details that still need some clarification. For example, will New Light players be able to play the new Season of Opulence Menagerie activity? It likely depends on whether Bungie classifies it as a ‘dungeon’ or not. The same goes for the Black Armory DLC’s Forge activities and the Joker’s Wild DLC’s Reckoning game mode.
Bungie will hopefully post additional FAQ’s in the near future. In the meantime, the above FAQ also contains information on how the cross-save functionality will work. Bungie also covers how PC players will be able to transfer their progress from Battle.net to Steam.
