All told, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare did not have much of a presence at E3 2019, partly due to Activision’s decision not to have a show floor booth this year. Infinity Ward did show off some gameplay behind closed doors, and additionally, made a single panel appearance with Geoff Keighley. The purpose of this, at the E3 Coliseum, was to announce Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Spec Ops; the revival of a classic game mode for the upcoming 2019 title.
The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Spec Ops Co-op Mode
The Spec Ops game mode has been a major part of past Call of Duty titles, although more recent games have dropped it in favour of other modes. Most notably, the series’ zombie game modes. Infinity Ward has already said that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare won’t be featuring a zombie mode; a decision which makes sense, given the seemingly more mature and serious tone of the game’s story. It seems that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Spec Ops mode will be what takes its place.
No doubt the return of this classic will be welcome news to fans, and perhaps a reassurance that the Modern Warfare reboot won’t be straying too far from its roots. While little is known about the upcoming mode yet, it will presumably be similar to its past iterations in previous Call of Duty titles. If so, players can expect Spec Ops to be a cooperative multiplayer experience which tasks players with completing short but hectic and often challenging missions. Teamwork was always an important part of Spec Ops, and is likely to be just as important in the upcoming title, if not more so.
In fact, it seems that the Spec Ops mode will have a direct connection to the game’s single-player story. According to campaign gameplay director Jacob Minkoff; “the single-player storyline goes straight into the co-op storyline.” At present, it’s unknown how the two will connect. Fans will have to wait for Infinity Ward to release more information. With the game scheduled for a 2019 release, however, they probably won’t have to wait too long.
