Fans don’t have long to wait now before the release of Borderlands 3, and with hype at an all-time high for the upcoming title, Gearbox is making one of their older games available to play for free. The announcement was made earlier today; Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition will be free to play this weekend on PC and Xbox One. Moreover, the game will be on sale on those same platforms for a limited time.
When You Can Play Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition for Free
“Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition is free to play this weekend on Xbox and Steam,” announced Gearbox, earlier today; “There’s never been a better time to become a Vault Hunter!” While it makes perfect sense for Gearbox to market their older titles now, with so many fans excited for their upcoming release, this is a little surprising. After all, the Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition is only a few months old. The remaster, which includes all DLC and Ultra HD 4K graphics, was announced on the same day as Borderlands 3. The game released shortly thereafter.
The game will be available to play on Steam and Xbox One all weekend. Additionally, it will be available for 50% off on Steam until the 22nd of July. On Xbox One, the game will be 50% off until the 29th instead. “Discover the co-op shooter-looter that started it all,” reads the promotional page; “crammed with content and enhancements! Equip bazillions of guns as one of 4 trigger-happy mercenaries, each with unique RPG skills. Take on the lawless desolate planet Pandora in pursuit of powerful alien technology: The Vault. With new weapons, visual upgrades, all 4 add-on packs and more, play solo or in 4-player split screen co-op!”

Certainly, this seems like an ideal chance for fans to return to the original Borderlands title, particularly if they’ve never played it. Even if fans are already familiar with the game, the Game of the Year Edition does offer a bit more than a visual upgrade. Gearbox added new weapons, character heads, gold chests and keys to the game as well.
