What’s In Store for the Future of Overwatch?

Overwatch is currently celebrating its second birthday with its Anniversary Event, which brings tons of old and new content to the game. While it’s fun to reminisce with content from past events like Summer Games or Uprising, brand new Overwatch content is unveiled on a pretty regular basis.

Blizzard keeps to a pretty tight schedule when it comes to Overwatch’s seasonal events like Halloween Terror and Lunar New Year, which are usually accompanied by fresh new skins and cosmetics as well as old favorites.

The Overwatch team also keeps it consistent when it comes to introducing new heroes. Though sometimes the lore side of things may seem lacking, Blizzard does intend to continue expanding Overwatch’s roster in order to enrich the game’s universe.

All this being said, you may be wondering what is next for Blizzard’s six vs. six shooter.  Well, let’s break it down.

Overwatch Events

Overwatch’s Anniversary is set to end on June 11, after this weekend’s double XP days. Blizzard hasn’t made any official announcements about the game’s next event, but a safe guess is the Summer Games. The event usually kicks off around August. Blizzard has hosted Overwatch’s Summer Games event every year since its launch, so this would be its third year running.

Symmetra Rework

The former support hero’s overhaul is now live on Overwatch’s PTR, but Blizzard hasn’t given the final say on when the patch will be uploaded to the live game.

New Features

  • Looking for Group (currently on PTR): “Join a team of other like-minded players or lead a group of your own by creating a group with your personal preferences such as game mode, role enforcement, and more,” Blizzard wrote.”
  • Endorsements: Endorsements are a way for players to support each other for good behavior in-game. You can be endorsed for things like sporstmanship, being a good teammate and shot calling. Endorsements are viewable on the Career Profile menu or the Groups menu.
  • Map Editor: The Overwatch team is interested in giving players the ability to custom maps, but this experience is a ways away.
  • Mini Map: Though Blizzard is “opposed to adding a mini map to the HUD for gameplay reasons,” esports tournament spectators may be getting a mini map soon.
  • New Heroes: The Overwatch team has been rolling out new heroes ever three months or so and this pattern is likely to continue. The newest hero to join the roster, Brigitte, was just introduced to the game in March so we’ve still got a while to wait to see who’s next.

While you’re waiting for juicy new Overwatch content, now is the perfect time to hop into the game’s second anniversary event and earn some of those seasonal cosmetics that may have slipped through your fingers. There is also a Double XP event running from now until June 11 when the anniversary event ends.
