Microsoft Is Not Developing a Streaming Only Console At This Time
With everything we were hearing about Project xCloud, a lot of gamers wondered just how deeply Microsoft was investing in streaming technology. In fact, you may have heard rumors that the company is developing a streaming only console. But we can lay those rumors to rest, at least at this time. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has told Gamespot that the company has other things to focus on at this time.
Phil Spencer Has Dismissed Streaming Only Console Rumors
Phil Spencer gave a very concrete “no” concerning the possibility of a streaming only console—at least at this juncture. He said, “Last year we talked about xCloud and then we said we were working on new game consoles, but that’s all I said.” We didn’t say that [a streaming console was in the works]. I think maybe some people thought that that was the disc-less one that we just shipped. We are not working on a streaming-only console right now. We are looking at the phone in your pocket as the destination for you to stream, and the console that we have allows you to play the games locally.”
So there you have it. That is as straightforward an answer as we could hope for with regards to the matter of a streaming only Xbox console. At the moment, it definitely isn’t on Microsoft’s radar.
This may come as a disappointment to some gamers, who were excited about the possibility. But quite a few gamers also have concerns regarding gaming moving to a digital/streaming only platform. So if you fall into that camp, you might actually be relieved to hear that this is not the direction that things are currently heading for Xbox.
