The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Engine Will Adapt to Next-Gen Consoles

While it isn’t necessarily a surprise for such a major franchise, Infinity Ward has revealed that the new engine on which Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is built will be able to adapt to the next generation of consoles. As a result, gamers can expect to be able to play the game on those consoles whenever they launch. Indeed, it seems as though the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare engine may have been built specifically for next-gen hardware.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Engine Will Function on Next-Gen Hardware

This latest revelation about the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare engine comes from a statement given to PlayStation LifeStyle by Michal Drobot; the Principal Rendering Engineer at Infinity Ward. Drobot initially joined Infinity Ward as part of a team of engineers to design the new engine. In the same statement, he revealed that an early version of this engine was used for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. However, the engine is now complete, and significantly improved.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare Engine Designed for Next-Gen Consoles

Speaking of the process of optimising Modern Warfare for release, Drobot states; “Obviously, during the optimisation phase for any shipping title, we do highly focused optimisations to make sure we are taking the best approach for specific hardware, but that is the final polish pass, not the foundation. With this approach, we are very confident in our engine’s ability to adapt to any future hardware.”

As a result, it now seems very likely that; a) the next Call of Duty will be a next-gen title, and; b) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be backwards compatible on next-gen hardware. In fact, given that the hardware is likely to release a full year after Modern Warfare, it may even get a dedicated re-release. For now, fans can look forward to the upcoming release on the 25th of October, on current-gen consoles and PC. The game’s first alpha test recently came to an end. However, an Open Beta will be taking place this month on all platforms; giving players a chance to try out the upcoming game for themselves.
