Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is now available, and that means players can finally give the much-talked-about story campaign a try for themselves. Activision has made a point of touting the maturity and quality of this campaign leading up to the game’s release, so expectations are certainly high. Of course, the campaign features several different difficulty options, from Recruit to the brutally difficult ‘Realism’ option.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Campaign Premise and Difficulty Options
“After chemical weapons fall into the wrong hands,” explains Activision; “Captain John Price and the SAS partner alongside the CIA and the Urzikstani Liberation Force to stop a potential global catastrophe. Play as SAS Sgt. Kyle Garrick, CIA Agent Alex, and ULF Leader Farah Karim in locales ranging from London to the Middle East, as this joint task force battles through betrayals, moral dilemmas, and tough situations with global implications.”
Once you head into the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare campaign, you’ll have the choice between five different difficulty settings. The easiest of these is Recruit, which is designed primarily for players new to the game and first-person shooters in general. Above that is Regular, which is the closest thing to a Normal setting. Activision describes it as the game’s “baseline difficulty”. Above Regular is Hardened, which Activision calls “a direct step up from Regular”.
The fourth difficulty setting in the Modern Warfare campaign is Veteran, which is very, very difficult. “There is little room for error when playing Campaign on Veteran,” explains Activision; “Given how difficult this setting is, it may not be the best setting for a first-time playthrough”. However, there is one setting even higher than Veteran; Realism. This option isn’t actually a higher difficulty per se. However, it does make gameplay significantly harder by removing most of the game’s HUD. As such, players should probably only attempt Realism once they’re very familiar with the game.
