Apparently, a blog called GAMERS GATE recently stated (in translation) that, “The release date of PlayStation 5 was decided on Friday, December 4, 2020. The price starts from 69,800 yen (excluding tax).” For reference, that would be around $636.99 USD. But now, Sony has commented on these claims about PlayStation 5 price and release date, and clarified that they are only rumors.
What Sony Said About the Claims About PlayStation 5 Price and Release Date
Famitsu contacted Sony about the claims. The writer of the article at Famitsu explains (in translation), “Regarding this matter, when I contacted the Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) spokesperson, ‘The posted content is not an official announcement’, denying this information content. In addition, the answer was ‘I will refrain from commenting on rumors and speculation.’”
Technically, this is neither a confirmation nor a denial of the rumored price and release date. But it does mean that nobody should mistake the GAMERS GATE post as containing any official information about the next gen console’s release.

But what do we think of the claim about the release date and price? Frankly, the price seems a little high. We have a hard time believing it will be over $600. Most consumers will balk at such a price. Also, as to the December 4th possible release date, that seems a bit late, as it will miss Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Surely that would be a wasted opportunity. So, it seems more likely that the console would be slated for release in the second half of November. A price point closer to $500 USD also seems more likely. But it is hard to say anything with confidence.
So, if you are looking for actual news (rather than speculation) about the PS5, one of the launch games for the new console recently received a formal announcement and a trailer. If we find out anything official about the release date or the price for the PS5, we will share it with you in our PlayStation news section.
