Modern Warfare was Most-Downloaded PlayStation Store Game in March

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare may have been out for months now, but it certainly hasn’t lost any of its appeal among gamers. In fact, most likely due to launch of Call of Duty: Warzone last month, it has seen a significant surge in new sales; enough for Modern Warfare PlayStation Store downloads in March to top the monthly rankings for most downloads on the platform!

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare PlayStation Store downloads have never been low, per se; ever since launch, the game has enjoyed very strong digital sales. Indeed, its steady stream of post-launch content and new seasons has kept plenty of new players picking it up. With the release last month of Call of Duty: Warzone as a free-to-play game, many more gamers have had a chance to experience Modern Warfare’s gameplay. As anticipated, it seems that many of those newcomers have subsequently chosen to download the full game too.

The latest monthly rankings for most-downloaded games was recently released on the official PlayStation Blog. These rankings reveal that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was the most-downloaded PS4 game in March. FIFA 20 came in at #2, while the ever-popular GTA V secured the #3 spot. The SIMS 4 and Minecraft took #4 and #5, respectively. Meanwhile, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt took #5; apparently still benefitting from the resurgence in interest prompted by the release of The Witcher Netflix series. Although interest was much lower due to the lack of multiplayer, the newly-released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered did manage to reach #20 in the rankings.

Unsurprisingly, Call of Duty: Warzone also performed extremely well in the March rankings. The new game was the PlayStation Store’s most-downloaded free-to-play game in March 2020. (A ranking which Sony tracks separately from the main rankings, which don’t include free-to-play titles.) Fortnite and Apex Legends; consistently two of the top-performing free-to-play games, have fallen to the #2 and #3 spots, respectively. It remains unknown whether Warzone will maintain its currently enormous audience figures in the coming weeks. However, given Activision and Infinity Ward’s experience keeping players engaged with post-launch content, the odds are good that Warzone will be a long-term success.
