Excited to find out what open world games are like on the PlayStation 5? While we have mostly been hearing that PS5 and Xbox Series X will run these games incredibly well, one former Sony game developer named Chris Grannell believes differently.
What Grannell Said About Open World Games on PS5
While talking to RDX about PS5 and Xbox Series X, Grannell said, “The big [difference] really is the amount of CUs (compute units) that’s pretty… that’s pretty huge when you start to look at real time ray tracing and things like that. Where PS5 is potentially going to struggle is some of those big third party games like open world [games].”
This is at direct odds with much of what we have been hearing to date about PS5 and these types of games. For example, nine months ago, developer Will Traxler of Traxmaster Software said while commenting on the SSD technology in both next-gen consoles, “I think we’re going to see SSDs have the biggest impact on open-world titles that constantly stream textures and models into a scene. Level-based games like Exception may see less of a benefit from SSDs, since most of the assets are loaded up-front and the load times are already brief. I’m sure that developers will come up with some great new uses for SSDs once these become standard in consoles. I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes.”
Both of these developers seem like they have good points to make regarding PS5 open world game performance. Hopefully the earlier optimism we were hearing will prove to be warranted. Maybe Grannell will be incorrect about the PS5 struggling. But we will just have to see how it all pans out. For future updates, follow our PlayStation news.
