As worldwide protests against racial injustice continue, Sony has made the decision to postpone tomorrow’s planned PS5 reveal event. Originally scheduled for the 4th of June, the event has now been delayed to an unspecified later date.
Sony Postpones This Week’s PS5 Game Reveal Event
Ahead of the upcoming PS5 reveal event due for this week, which many have speculated could feature the official reveal of the 2020 Call of Duty title, Sony took to social media to release an official statement. “We have decided to postpone the PlayStation 5 event scheduled for June 4,” they write; “While we understand gamers worldwide are excited to see PS5 games, we do not feel that right now is a time for celebration and for now, we want to stand back and allow more important voices to be heard.”
The decision comes in a week where many other companies have muted their social media channels for similar reasons; out of respect for the ongoing protests and so as not to distract from more important messages. Sony is not the only company to postpone plans. Gearbox has also chosen to delay the release of their new Borderlands 3 Takedown, for instance, which was also due to release on the 4th of June. CD Projekt Red, too, have delayed their upcoming Night City Wire event to the 25th.
Sony has yet to announce a new date for their PS5 event. Of course, as their social media channel remains mute, the company is unlikely to do so soon. Since the 31st of May, Sony has only released one other statement; another message of solidarity with those protesting racial injustice; “We denounce systemic racism and violence against the Black community. We will continue to work towards a future marked by empathy and inclusion and stand with our Black creators, players, employees, families, and friends. #BlackLivesMatter.”
