Bungie Explains How Destiny 2’s Upcoming Weapon Slot Changes Will Work

Over the past few days, Bungie has been slowly teasing out new details about Destiny 2’s upcoming Forsaken expansion, including how its new bow and arrow weapon type was designed and the fact that the expansion will see the return of character level boosts. Now, Bungie is turning to one of the new features that will be available to all players regardless of whether or not they purchase the Forsaken expansion: the revamped weapon slot system.

Certain weapons will drop for the kinetic, energy, and power weapon slots.

In a recent E3 interview that Bungie conducted with Twinfinite, Destiny 2: Forsaken project lead Scott Taylor explained how the new weapon slot system will work. According to Taylor, rocket launchers, swords, grenade launchers, and linear fusion rifles will remain as power weapons only, but all other weapon types (including sniper rifles and shotguns) will have the potential of dropping as either a kinetic, energy, or power weapon.

This means that, for example, when a player finds a shotgun as a reward drop for completing an activity or decrypting an Engram, it will be assigned to one of the three weapon slots and be locked to that slot. In theory, if a player were to find a kinetic shotgun, an energy shotgun, and a power shotgun, they could have three shotguns equipped at once, though such a strategy wouldn’t be very viable since all three shotguns would be drawing from the same ammo reserve and thus the player would run out of ammo very quickly.

Taylor’s comments also suggest that existing weapons won’t be getting new “slot versions” of themselves. Since the Legendary hand cannon Better Devils is currently a kinetic weapon, it will only ever drop as a kinetic weapon even after the weapon slot changes go into effect. However, if you’ve ever dreamed of assigning a sniper rifle to one of your non-power weapon slots or assigning two versions of a specific weapon you enjoy to both the kinetic and energy slots, it sounds like you’ll be able to do so (as long as you find the right weapon drops of course).
