Rumor: PS5 Players Will Be Able to Share Custom Save States

Imagine how cool it would be to be able to share custom save states with other gamers. With the PlayStation 5, that might be possible, at least if a recent patent is any indication. While the patent may or may not be connected with the forthcoming next gen console, it certainly seems like a likely possibility.

How the Custom Save State Sharing Feature Might Work

The Sony patent has the title, “US20200222802 – METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR SHARING VIDEO GAME CONTENT.” The summary explains, “A video game sharing method and system enables users to share playable video game segments with users so that the users are able to view the video game segments or interactively play the video game segments. When shared, state information for the video game segments is included such that the users begin in the same position with the same relevant statistics. By enabling video game sharing, user enjoyment and video game popularity are increased.”

The most obvious way to make use of this feature would probably be to create a custom tutorial to show others how to complete a level or deal with a glitch or so forth. But one imagines there might be many other possibilities as well. One could even use custom save states for something as simple as sharing a beautiful sunset in Skyrim. One wonders if this technology also could be useful in demonstrating mods.

Again, the patent does not necessarily connect with the PS5, but it is the most obvious way to interpret it. And the existence of a patent does not necessarily guarantee a new feature will exist. But this is not the first time we have heard about something like this. So, it seems entirely plausible that this feature may make its way to the next gen console.
