Learning how to do hot routes in Madden 21 can take your passing and playmaking to a new level. Many gamers know how to call an audible in order to adjust their offense, and hopefully catch the defense off guard. Madden 21 Hot Routes can add an additional way to switch things up, as your tight end or receiver will change the route they were initially on for the play. Here’s how to use them in the game.
How to do Hot Routes in Madden 21
In Madden, you call your passing play, and each of the receivers involved in the play has a route. As shown in the screenshot below, this play focuses on tight end Travis Kelce. His route, shown in red, has him run straight up, then slant diagonally for an open pass. Other receivers with the yellow routes are mostly headed to the end zone.
Here’s how to do hot routes in Madden 21:
- Press Triangle on PS4 or Y button on the Xbox One controller. This will call up a pop-up menu on the screen which shows all of the available receivers on routes.
- Select the receiver you want to use a hot route for. In our example, we select Travis Kelce.
- Note: Because Kelce has Superstar abilities, he gets extra hot routes on this play as compared to other tight ends. Those are in the third box on the menu pop-up. Most other players will have just the first two boxes.
- Press a direction on your controller’s Left or Right Stick, or the Directional Pad, or if available, press the L1/LB, R1/RB, R2/RT buttons to select the new route you want your receiver to use.
Hot Route options vary
Each of the options will have your receiver moving differently. For example, if you select “Corner,” Kelce will head towards the right sideline rather than the route the play has. If you select one of the “Block & Release” routes he’ll block on the play for a bit before getting open. If you select “Streak” he’ll head straight down the field towards the endzone.
These will change based on the plays you call and your personnel, so it’s best to become familiar with the specific players or teams you plan to use. As with other how-to guides, we recommend trying this out in the Exhibition mode to practice the basics until they are easier to use.
The video below takes things to another level, helping you set up new special routes to use to further add to your arsenal of plays.
