What does the arrival of PS5 mean for gamers who intend to keep playing on their PlayStation 4 consoles for a few years before upgrading? You might be wondering whether Sony is going to stop supporting the console. But according to PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan, Sony plans to continue supporting the PS4 community for a few years as it is “incredibly important.”
Sony Says PS4 “Incredibly Important” For Next Few Years
In an interview with The Washington Post, Ryan said, “The PS4 community will continue to be incredibly important to us for three or four years. Many will transition to PS5, we hope if we do our job well, but tens of millions will still be engaged with the PS4.”
Naturally, Sony is going to shift most of its focus to PS5 going forward. But it is reassuring to hear that at least for a few years, PS4 gamers can expect the company to keep their interests at heart. Plus, we can say from experience that Sony has a pretty good track record with long-term support. In fact, it doesn’t seem all that long ago that a PS3 update was available (okay, it’s been a while—but still, long after the PS4 generation began).
Speaking of PlayStation 4, Sony recently announced that some PS5 games are also going to be on PS4. Also of interest to those who want to transition to PS5, the company confirmed it will be backwards compatible with 99% of PS4 games. Hopefully there will be some more details soon, as there are still a lot of unanswered questions about backwards compatibility.
