Sony Projects More First Fiscal Year PS5 Sales Than PS4 Achieved

We are all waiting eagerly for November, when the PS5 will be released. Pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 already sold out, proving that demand is every bit as high as Sony previously projected. Indeed, retailers are struggling to keep up, and have announced that some customers will receive their pre-orders as late as next year. So, it comes as no surprise that SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan believes that first fiscal year PS5 sales could surpass those of PS4.

Could First Fiscal Year PS5 Sales Eclipse Those of PS4?

Ryan was talking with Naver, a Korean news site, when he mentioned the company’s high expectations for PS5 sales. He said (in translation), “We think the PS5 will sell more in its first fiscal year than it sold in the first fiscal year at the time of PS4 launch.”

Demand for PS5 and Xbox Series X this year is inflated because of coronavirus. Although lockdown is over in a lot of countries, many people spent much of this year cooped up in their homes. Plus, a lot of people are still staying home as much as possible. We can expect that trend to continue for the foreseeable future. So, folks want to play video games.

Sony also stated in the past that they are ramping up production so that they can meet this high demand. Nevertheless, we expect that the shortages will continue, and it will probably not be easy to get your hands on a console this year.
