Foolish Mother Throws Away $500,000 Worth of Video Games

Storing any of your old stuff at your parents’ house? You should be extra sure you can trust them. Sometimes parents do dumb things—like throw away their kids’ stuff without permission. In extreme cases, what is lost is not just of sentimental value, but of significant monetary value as well. Such is the case with one gamer whose mom threw out $500,000 worth of video games.

One Gamer Lost $500,000 Worth of Video Games Because of His Mom

On Twitter, the gamer in question said, “I just found out my mom a few years ago threw out ALL my PS1 games. 500+ games half still sealed. I am going to kill somebody.” He also lost consoles such as a Atari, Coleco, Intelli, Famicom, Super Famicom, TGfx, PCE, NG AES, Mega Drive (Genesis) and Master System. On top of that, she threw out “two Marshall stacks, 14 pedals, drum kit, board.” Since posting, he has deleted his tweets.

There are some questions lingering here. The gamer claims his full collection was worth $500,000. If so, did he not explain this to his mom—and did he not consider whether there was a more secure way to store it all? On the other hand, if he did tell his mom, why was she so foolish as to throw it away? One would think that even from a self-serving standpoint, she would realize that protecting her son’s financial well-being ultimately might help protect her own.

Of course, it is possible she just did not believe him about the worth of the collection. That might not be surprising. Considering how disrespectful it is to throw out someone’s possessions without asking them, one might expect such a person also not to take their son’s claims seriously.

Regardless, there are lessons for us all here. If you are storing your stuff with your parents, make sure they respect you. And if you are a parent, please respect your kid’s possessions, even if they don’t seem important to you. You might be surprised at their financial worth. And either way, they have value to your kid, and that is all that should matter.
