Next week, The Game Awards will be holding its annual live award show, on the 10th of December. Since its launch just a few years ago, The Game Awards has become the largest and most significant awards ceremony in the industry, and its 2020 show is set to feature a whole range of guest hosts, major announcements, and more.
The Upcoming 2020 Game Awards Ceremony
The Game Awards 2020 will be taking place live next Thursday, on the 10th of December. Unlike previous shows, the 2020 ceremony will be purely online, with no live audience. However, the global show will nevertheless be available to watch as usual on YouTube and Twitch, as it has been for the several years now since the event first began.
Over the course of the last few weeks, The Game Awards has opened its voting categories to the general public; allowing gamers to vote for their picks in a range of different categories. These include the obvious title awards like “Best RPG,” and “Best Soundtrack”. However, they also include an increasingly large number of awards for esports figures and content creators. This is a portion of The Game Awards which has gotten larger every year since its founding.
The biggest award of the night, of course, will be Game of the Year. Despite fewer major games launching in 2020 due to the dual factors of the COVID-19 pandemic and the next-gen console launch (meaning that many developers are waiting until 2021 to release their big next-gen projects), there are nonetheless a strong slate of contenders.
Six games are up for the Game of the Year in total; Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Doom Eternal, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Ghost of Tsushima, Hades, and The Last of Us Part II. The strongest contenders are very likely to be the two big triple-A PlayStation exclusives; Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us, both of which enjoyed enormous success this year. Of course, fans will have to tune in to The Game Awards live show this Thursday to learn the results.
