Although CD Projekt Red has already released two hotfixes to try and address the worst of Cyberpunk 2077‘s many problems, new glitches and other issues continue to emerge. The latest to be discovered by players is that using the Cyberpunk 2077 crafting system too much can lead to your save file becoming irrevocably corrupted.
The Problem with Cyberpunk 2077 Crafting
As you play Cyberpunk 2077, your save file’s size will naturally grow larger, as the game records more and more information. However, it seems that the game’s crafting system has a tendency to add to this file size a bit too much; so much that your save file can become too large, whereupon it may corrupt and becomes impossible to recover. Players have reported that save files of around 6 MB and larger may take longer to load. Meanwhile, 8 MB appears to be the point when saves are most likely to corrupt.
CD Projekt Red has issued advice to players who have encountered this bug, recommending that they; “Use an older save file to continue playing and try to keep a lower amount of items and crafting materials”. To make matters worse, it appears that save files which have already fallen victim to this bug may never get fixed. The studio has said that; “The save file size limit might be increased in one of the future patches,” but clarified that; “the corrupted files will remain that way.”
This problem isn’t just limited to the Cyberpunk 2077 crafting system. (Although using that system does appear to be the easiest way to accidentally trigger it.) Simply hoarding too many items will also increase your save file size. The crafting system is particularly concerning, however, because players have reported that their save file size doesn’t decrease after selling off their crafted items. CD Projekt Red has also warned players not to take advantage of any item duplication glitches for this reason; using such a glitch is a surefire way to hit this upper limit and permanently corrupt your save file.
