Cyberpunk 2077 “Dev Post” Confirmed False by CD Projekt Red

Last month, a post was made on GameFaqs quoting somebody claiming to be a Cyberpunk 2077 dev, allegedly sharing some of the studio’s internal plans. More recently, this post was shared on Reddit, where it attracted a great deal more attention. However, CD Projekt Red has now stepped in to state that the post is totally false.

Recent Cyberpunk 2077 “Dev” Post is False

The lengthy post claims to reveal details about what CD Projekt Red are planning for the future of Cyberpunk 2077. Indeed, it states that the studio is planning for a; “‘No Man’s Sky’ style comeback due to late June”. However, it seems that whomever wrote the post is not who they were claiming to be. Earlier today, the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account posted the Reddit threat, with the statement; “Normally we don’t comment on rumours but this time we wanted to make an exception as this story is simply not true.”

Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Post Confirmed False by CD Projekt Red

Of course, it’s certainly believable that CD Projekt Red might look to past examples like No Man’s Sky for lessons in how to recover from a deeply-troubled launch. However, it’s also an obvious point of comparison, highlighting that the original post was largely lacking in verifiable details; much of it, including its tone, comes across as an angry fan or online troll trying to stir up attention. (One reason why many news sites, including VGR, chose not to cover it when it first began to circulate.)

What is true is that CD Projekt Red have their work cut out for them addressing the many problems currently plaguing Cyberpunk 2077. The game’s active player count on Steam – its best-performing platform – has dropped 80% since launch. Plus, the studio is facing a class-action lawsuit. Even if upcoming patches manage to fix all of the game’s problems, the blow to CD Projekt Red’s reputation will take an enormous amount of effort and time to recover from.
