Just a few weeks ago, Sony gave PlayStation fans their first look at an upcoming next-gen VR system for the PS5. Now, the company has revealed the controllers which will be coming with that system; a brand-new design featuring a range of advanced features which weren’t included in the original PS4 VR controller.
The Official PS5 VR Controllers Revealed
The next-gen PS5 VR controller has quite a unique design, with each controller forming a ring around the user’s hands. According to Sony, this design will afford players a high degree of freedom, with greater balance and comfort than previous controllers. The device also builds upon technology from the DualSense PS5 controller, such as Adaptive Triggers. These will allow players to feel different degrees of tension when pressing down the trigger buttons. Given how much immersion can be heightened in VR, it makes perfect sense to lean into these features as much as possible.

Following on from that, the PS5 VR controllers will include haptic feedback, which should improve in-game sensations. “When you’re traversing through rocky desert or trading blows in melee combat,” writes Sony; “you’ll feel the difference, magnifying the extraordinary visual and audio experience that’s so central to VR.”
When it comes to the actual physical design, each controller includes a single analog stick, a trigger button, a grip button (L2/R2), the Create/Options button, and two other buttons; the left has the triangle and square buttons while the right has the cross and circle. However, beyond the buttons and sticks, both controllers will offer ‘finger touch detection’. In all likelihood, this will be similar to the finger-tracking mechanic offered by the Oculus Quest VR controller.
Sony has yet to announce an official release date for the PS5 VR system and its controllers. However, in their latest blog, the company states that; “Prototypes of our new VR controller will be in the hands of the development community soon, and we can’t wait to see what ideas they come up with and how the controller helps bring their imagination to life!”
